Both reindeer and caribou are unique as they are the only members of the deer family to have females with antlers. It has been discovered that social hierarchy is determined by antler size. During mating season the buck with the largest antlers is sure to dominate over less mature bucks. After the rut, the males lose their antlers and the females become dominant.
