HELP INDEX NEXT UP PREVIOUS FEEDBACK ATG Family Equisetaceae
Cones of Field Horsetail Today the Horsetail Family (Equisetaceae) has only one remaining genus Equisetum but species of Equisetum are widespread. They are more common in the northern hemisphere than in the south, and none are known to grow in the Australian region. You can find horsetails growing in gravelly wasteland, in marshy ground, or damp woods. They are easy to recognise because of the whorls of green branches along the stem. Fertile shoots have spore-bearing cones at their tips. [CH] {FG}
