Order Cycadales
Cycads are primitive seed plants that were once
growing in profusion all over the world. Most species
are now extinct but a few of their descendants remain.
They probably evolved from ancient "seed-ferns" that
flourished 500 million years ago. Cycads grow in
sub-tropical regions including Australia. As in the
Ginkgos, male and female plants are separate and the male
pollen produces a swimming sperm cell.
