Water Hyacinth
Water Hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes is a native of
South America that was introduced to the southern part
of the United States as a pond plant. In some areas it
has choked waterways with its abundant growth and it has
proved difficult to control. The leaf stalks have air
chambers that enable the plant to float on the surface and
its roots dangle down in the water. The six-pointed
flowers are light blue with yellow spots.
