Reed bed Common Reed or Ditch Reed Phragmites communis is a large grass which grows in fresh-water and salty marshes and along the banks of streams. Its underground creeping stems help to bind the soil and prevent erosion. It grows up to 3 metres tall and its plume-like flower heads wave gracefully when a breeze blows across the reed bed.
