Custard Apple
The Annonaceae, or custard apple family, contains approximately 70 percent of the total
genera and 75 percent of the species in the order.
Members of the family grow mostly throughout the tropics, although a few species extend
into temperate regions. They are particularly characteristic of the lowland evergreen
forests in Asia and Africa.
Many species are valuable for their large, pulpy fruits, some are useful for their
timber, and others are prized as ornamentals. The family consists of trees, shrubs and wood
climbers.
Bark, leaves, and roots of many species are important in folk medicine, and others bear
edible fruits or are important sources of perfume and spice.
