Male and female catkins of Alder Trees like Oak and Birch belong in Order Fagales. There are over a thousand species of trees and shrubs in this order. Male flowers are clustered in catkins and some species produce fruits that are good to eat like the sweet chestnut. There are three families in Fagales and the biggest one with most of the species is the Beech Family (Fagaceae). The picture shows male and female catkins of an Alder. [CH] {EN}
