These solitary animals unite during mating season in the spring. After a long gestation period of 240 days, 2 cubs are born. These cubs stay with the mother for at least 10 months, at which time they weigh between 200 and 400 lb. With a thick white undercoat and longer guard hairs, the young polar bears are forced to leave their mother and begin their own solitary journey along the southern edge of the Arctic pack ice.
