The rump of both the mule deer and the Virginia deer is white and is exposed when the black tip tail is held high. Males grow antlers in the spring and shed them between January and March. These species are unique as they live solitary lives or form small herds. They form larger herds only in winter when food is scarce. They feed primarily on grasses, shrubs, lichen and in the summer months they feed on fresh pine and aspen twigs.MORE! [BM] {FW}
