The name sandpiper is a common name given to those birds belonging to two subfamilies: Calidritinae and Tringinae. Wading through the water on long legs, sandpipers feed on small animals, such as worms, mollusks, mussels and fish. In general, sandpipers have long bills and earthen toned plumage which aids in camouflage. This picture taken in the Everglades catches a stilt sandpiper wading in the warm waters. [BM] {FW}
