The sanderling is a sandpiper. Like other sandpipers the sanderling is a wader, feeding on small animals such as worms, mollusks, mussels and fish. In general, sandpipers have long bills, long legs and earthen toned plumage which aids in camouflage. Sanderlings are distinguished from other sandpipers by the inclusion of a hind toe.
