The southern toad is a robust toad ranging in length from 4 to 11 cm. The colours of the mottled skin includes brown, red and black. In some toads the warts are surrounded by dark spots. The southern toad is nocturnal, remaining in its burrow during daylight hours. This toad can be found in a variety of habitats from grassy backyards to sandy oak forests.
