Quakers
Members of the Friends Churches have received the name Quaker for they were told to "tremble at the
word of the Lord".
Established by the English religious mystic George Fox (1624-91) they were persecuted in England,
refusing to fight in war or take oaths.
They settled in Pennsylvania under the protection of William Penn (1644-1718).
The Quakers traditionally keep themselves separate from the local culture by dressing in simple
clothes and avoiding secular amusements. This is a Pennsylvanian farm.
Quakers usually have no clergy and no formal church structure.
They are well known for their doctrine of the Inner Light which holds that "the spark of God is in
each individual".
The Quakers have a history of excellent work in world relief and peace organizations.
