Modern Rwanda

During the 1950's Belguim attempted to institute democracy. Tutsi traditionalists resisted all attempts at democracy which led to the Hutu revolt of 1959. The Hutus led a violent conflict forcing many Tutsis to flee. The Hutus were granted internal autonomy in 1962. In that same year Rwanda was declared independent. The new govenment was quickly overthrown & violence continued. [BM] {UA}
