Between 1899 & 1902 Panama fought the "Thousand Day War" against the Bogota government. In 1903 Panama gained independence from Gran Columbia. In 1914 the Panama Canal was first opened. Construction & control of the canal was under the U.S. government. From 1903 until 1936 Panama remained a protectorate of the U.S. [BM] {UA}
