Medieval Panama

Spanish explorers discovered Panama in 1501. By 1519 the City of Panama had been founded. Panama left the Spanish empire in 1821 confirming a commitment to the viceroyalty of New Granada & becoming a part of Gran Columbia. In 1825 a canal company proposed a transisthmian route connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. In 1885 the U.S. financed the construction of a railway which ran from Colon to Panama City.
