In the early 1900's the part of the island controlled by the Germans was occupied by Australia. By 1949 the former German & British colonies were administered jointly by Australia under a United Nations mandate. In 1975 Papua New Guinea became an independent nation. Strong ties remain between Papua New Guinea & Australia.
