In 1989 Papau New Guinea experienced economic hardship as separatist guerillas closed a vital copper mine. Things improved in 1991 as a boom in gold & oil productions resulted in an 8% increase in the GDP. However, crime, violence & disputes over land ownership inhibits foreign investment.
