Moldavia was relinquished from Turkish control in 1812 when this territory was ceded to the Russian empire. The territories of Ukraine, Moldova & Romania have experienced unrest throughout the 20th century. Romania & the USSR were at war between 1941 and 1944. The USSR discouraged contact between Romania & Moldavia. The USSR tried to mold the people of Moldavia to become more "Russian" thus separating them from their neighbours. [BM] {UA}
