During the 1980's under the leadership of Russian president, Mikhail Gorbachev, Moldavia was released from Russian control. In 1990 the Communist party was banned in Moldova. One year later Moldova declared independence from Russia. Reunification with Romania was considered, but finally rejected in favour of an independent Moldova in 1994. [BM] {UA}
