In 1821 the Greeks rebelled against the Ottoman Turks, gaining independence in 1827 with the help of England, Russia and France. From 1827 to 1913 Greece was ruled by a German and, later, a Danish monarchy. In the Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1914 Greece gained territory, reaching approximately it's present size. [BM] {UA}
