Smithsonite
Chemically known as zinc carbonate, smithsonite is a common mineral that is white when it is in
a pure form, but a wide range of colours when impurities are present. Smithsonite is hard, heavy
and fragile. Smithsonite can be found in places such as Namibia, Zambia, Greece, and Spain.
This mineral was named after James Smithson who lived from 1765 to 1829, and is the founder
of the Smithsonian Institute.
