Duckweed
Duckweed Lemna minor is a tiny plant with a flattened
thallus and a single dangling root that is commonly found
growing on the surface of ponds. The whole plant is only
a few millimetres across but it spreads by vegetative
budding and can cover the pond with green. It is a source
of food for water birds and for fish. The flowers are
minute and rarely found and they have no sepals or petals.
Because of its small size duckweed is a useful plant for
scientific research.
