Ancient Ferns
Ferns are some of the earliest land plants and they
probably evolved from
water plants through the ancestors of Mosses
(Bryophytes) and Whisk Ferns
(Psilophytes). Primitive Ferns developed not only a
system of internal
tubes for conducting water and food, but also large
leaves containing
chlorophyll for photosynthesis. Modern Ferns have
roots, creeping stems and
frond-like leaves that are often divided and divided
again in a delicate lacy
pattern.
