Liverwort Eggs
The female sex organs of a liverwort (Riccia) are shown in this
section. Egg-producing organs or "archegonia" exude a substance that
attracts the male sperm cells which race to be the first to fertilise the
female cell. When an egg and sperm have fused, the new sporophyte develops
with two sets of chromosomes in each of its cells.
