Weaver Ant
(Order Hymenoptera Family Formicidae)
Weaver ants, like other ants, live in complex social colonies. Ranging in size from 1 to 25 mm,
weaver ants are black, brown or red. Most are predators and scavengers. On occasion winged male
and female emerge to perform a brief mating flight. After mating the male ants die and the females
lose their wings, returning to the ground to start new colonies. This photograph was taken in
Menchali National Forest, Borneo.
