Mayan pyramid, Uxmal,
Yucatan, Mexico Each city state had its own ruler and group of nobles. Great palaces and temples symbolized the power of the elite. The Maya were constantly at war over territory, lineage, honour or the need for slaves for sacrifices. Battles were short but frequent and usually took place in May and October when the foot soldiers did not have to be in their fields. Shown here is a Mayan pyramid. [RB] {GC}
