Turkmenistan did not expereince the same rebirth as many Soviet nations during the Gorbachev years. The main cultural issue which occupied the citizens concerned the use of their own language instead of Russian. Democracy was not the central issue. Nevertheless Turkmenistan gained independence in 1991. Since independence Turkmenistan has been active to develop economic & political relations with Iran & Turkey.
