Modern Turkmenistan

During the 19th century the Russians edged into Turkmen territory. In 1881 some 150 000 Turkmen were killed by Russians in the Gok Tepe battle. Although there was strong Nationalism the Russians finally ruled the Turkmen territory. In 1924 under Soviet rule the territory was named the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. Under Soviet rule advances were made in public health & medicine. [BM] {UA}
