In 1961 Tanganyika became independent. In 1964 Tanganyika & Zanzibar were united to form Tanzania, with Zanzibar retaining local autonomy. Tanzania maintains close ties with Great Britain & has strengthened ties with Kenya & Uganda. Tanzania is both politically stable & holds great economic potential. In 1994-95 more than 700 000 refugees entered Tanzania as a result of the civil wars in Burundi & Rwanda. This flood of refugees has put a strain on Tanzania. [BM] {UA}
