The sultanate of Oman dominated Tanganyika & Zanzibar into the 19th century. When the sultanate of Oman disintegrated Germany & Britain became active in this region. In 1884 Tanganyika became a colony of German East Africa. Several years later Zanzibar became a protectorate of Britain. After WWI, under a League of Nations mandate, Britain assumed control of Tanganyika as well. In 1963 Zanzibar became independent. Strife followed as tensions rose between Arab & African residents on the island. [BM] {UA}
