In the 1930's oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia, transforming this poor nation into one of the wealthiest. In 1945 Saudi Arabia helped found the United Nations & the Arab League. Since the 1970's Saudi Arabia has been involved in the Middle Eastern turmoil. Saudi Arabia funded the PLO for many years & has also traded oil for arms despite Israeli protests. Since the Persian Gulf war Saudi Arabia has worked alongside the United States in efforts to reach a permanent peace accord in the Middle East. [BM] {UA}
