When the Russians left Romania in 1958 the dictator Gheorghiu-Dej followed a Stalinist model in pursuit of industrialization. Romania's agricultural economy was replaced by ineffective industrialization leaving Romania in an economic depression. Power was passed to Ceausescu in 1965. Through his leadership conditions worsened. In 1989 there was a violent uprising & the communist party was outlawed in 1990. Romanian leaders are hoping to restore their nation's broken economy & regain peace. [BM] {UA}
