Modern Romania

In the 15th century Moldavia & Walachia were ruled by the Ottoman Empire. Although ruled by the Ottoman Empire these provinces retained their orthodox Chrisitianity & unique culture. In 1861 the two provinces united & became the state of Romania, within the Ottoman Empire. Full independence was reached in 1878. During WWI Romania increased in size, doubling its territory. This power was short lived as Russia crushed Romania in WWII. [BM] {UA}
