Throughout the first half of the 20th century the Radical Liberal party, an anticlerical group, dominated the politics in Ecuador. The economy was largely dependent of the production of cacao. This was to change in the 1950's by increased sales of bananas, and again in the 1960's with the discovery of oil. In the 1990's Ecuador struggles with an increasing cocaine trade and the uprising of their Indian minority. [BM] {UA}
