In the early 1800's Ecuador formed part of the Confederation of Gran Columbia. When this Confederation collapsed in 1830, Ecuador was ruled by a dictator for the next 15 years. From 1845 to 1895 the Conservatives dominated the government. This government had close ties with the Jesuits and imposed Christianity. [BM] {UA}
