In 1891 Rhodesia was declared a British protectorate. Northern Rhodesia was administered by the British South Africa Co. until 1924 at which time Northern & Southern Rhodesia separated. Southern Rhodesia joined the British Empire, ruled by the white population. This changed in 1953 when Northern & Southern Rhodesia joined with Nysaland to form the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland. This union disolved in 1963; Northern Rhodesia became Zambia & Nysaland became Malawi. [BM] {UA}
