Between 1865 & 1870 Uruguay was involved in the war of the Triple Alliance. Allied with Argentina & Brazil, they fought against Paraguay & won. The Colorades controlled politics in Uruguay from 1865 until 1958. During this era many Europeans immigrated to Uruguay & made up half the population. Under the leadership of president Batlle positive labor & social reform was implemented coupled with progressive legislation on the rights of women. [BM] {UA}
