Medieval Uruguay
In 1516 the Spanish first explored the
area which is now known as Uruguay. In 1680 the Portuguese founded the
Colonia de
Sacramento. In 1726 the Porutguese settled the town of Montevideo. Uraguayans fought against
the
Portuguese, ousting them in 1928. In 1930 a new constitution was drawn; however, civil
war broke out between
Liberal & Conservative factions. The Liberals (Colorados) won the
victory in 1865 after more than 30 years of unrest.
