The Russian empire collapsed in 1917 & Ukrainian nationalists sought autonomy. Ukrainians were quickly subdued by the Red Army & in 1922 the Ukraine became one of the original members of the USSR. Millions of Ukrainians died while under Soviet control. The world focused on the Ukraine in 1986 when the Soviets attempted to cover up a deadly nuclear explosion in a Chernobyl power plant. The Ukraine shed its status as a Soviet republic in 1991 & declared total independence. [BM] {UA}
