Modern Uganda
At the close of the 19th
century Britain established a protectorate over Ugandan territory. Through the British,
Uganda's rich agricultural potential was tapped. In 1962 Uganda became independent within
the British commonwealth.
In 1967 Uganda became an independent republic with a new
constitution. The first president of Uganda was Milton
Obote. Obote was overthrown in 1971
in what began several decades of hardships for the people of Uganda.
