By the 1830's Boers & British began exploration of Swaziland. Fifty years later, gold was discovered & large numbers of migrants entered the area. The illiterate, unknowing Swazi rulers were led to sign the rights of their lands away to the Boers & British. In 1894 the British & Boers came to an agreement allowing the Boers to control Swaziland. The power changed hands once again in 1902 when the British defeated the Boers in the Boer War. [BM] {UA}
