By the beginning of the 20th century the northern portion of Somalia was under British control & the southern portion had been aquired by Italy. At this time there was a brief uprising of Somalis against the British. The British defeated this wave of nationalism. During WWII the British & Italians fought over the northern & southern portions of Somalia. It was not until 1960 that the two parts were finally united & became an independent republic. [BM] {UA}
