Medieval Somalia
Trading settlements were
first established by the Arabs during the 7th century. The Arabs were to be
followed by the
Portuguese during the 15th & 16th centuries when they too established trading settlements in
Somalia. Early in the 19th century the British were allowed
use of the coastal harbours
through local treaties; they eventually gained control of the northern part of the country.
