In 1942 Japan attacked Singapore & held control until the British reoccupied the city in 1945, reorganizing Singapore as a British colony one year later. In 1959 Singapore became a self-governing parlimentary democracy within the British Commonwealth. Lee Kwan Yew became the Prime Minister. In 1965 Singapore became an independent nation. Lee Kwan Yew continued in his role of prime minister until 1990 when he resigned. He is the longest serving prime minister in the world. [BM] {UA}
