In 1819 Singapore was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. Singapore was founded on land ceded to the East India Company by the sultanate of Johore. In 1824 a treaty turned this newly founded territory to the British Crown. Singapore boasted an excellent harbor & soon became a dominant port for trade. [BM] {UA}
