Modern South Africa
Late in the 18th century
tensions rose between the British & the Dutch over the territory known as the Cape of Good
Hope. This tension led to the Great Trek of the Boers (Dutch farmers) into northern South
Africa. The Boers, also
known as Afrikaners, entered territory which belonged to the Zulu
kingdom. Within the 19th century the Zulus
were defeated & the Afrikaaners established the
provinces of the Orange Free State & Transvaal. British rule however
remained dominant.
