In 1898 Spain sold the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million. Anticipating independence the Filipinos declared the islands a republic. Between 1899-1905 the Americans led a bloody battle to suppress the Filipinos. Independence was not granted until 1946. The economy was very poor & large cities with sprawling slums developed.
