Modern Palau

The Germans took great efforts to establish coconut harvesting & mining. Germany also introduced health care & fought epidemics of dysentery & influenza which had killed some 35 000 people, leaving a population of 4000. In 1914 Japan occupied Palau & continued to encourage agriculture, mining, & fishing. Palau developed under Japanese control for the next 30 years. [BM] {UA}
