Recent Palau

During WWII Palau was heavily damaged. In 1947, after the war, Palau was placed under a Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands by the United Nations. This trusteeship left Palau under US authority. In 1994 the trusteeship ended & Palau became an independent republic. An agreement has been made between Palau & the U.S which allows the U.S. to dock military vessels in the islands for 50 years in exchange for defence & $517 million in aid over 15 years. [BM] {UA}
